CHARACTERISTICS
Peoples Run – Memorial Mother Theresa of Calcutta is
a running manifestation which includes a competition on a
classical distance of half a marathon (21 Km and 95 meters)
and two non-competitive races (7 Km and 2 Km.).
It will take place in Tirana (capital of Albania) on Sunday
Ocyober 19th 2003, the day of the beatification of the greatest
person of Albanian origin, Mother Theresa of Calcutta.
Temperature
At the end of October the average temperature in
Tirana is never over 18/20° C.
RACE
The Peoples race takes place on a flat city trail, closed
to city traffic and controlled for a length of 7 Km and 30
meters to be done 3 times for the half marathon and once for
the non-competitive race of 7 Km. The children who will participate
for 2 Km will go directly to the Central Skanderberg square
and return to the arrival point. The starting/arrival point
is located in the Mother Theresa Square near the University
and the Stadium. The race will pass through the most beautiful
area of Tirana which makes it similar to any other modern
city.
There
are however contrasts between the typical buildings of the
communist era (such as the pyramids/mausoleum which are in
the central avenue) and the examples of the fascist architecture
built at the times when Albania was part of the Italian Empire.
A good part of the race runs along the avenues along the river,
the one on which numerous abusive buildings were thrown down
and now has become a symbol of the new Albania.
